Start Your Day the Parfait Way

Start Your Day the Parfait Way offers students a fun breakfast option in the morning before school. The pilot program by the Dairy Council of Florida and General Mills Foodservice is focused on increasing breakfast participation in schools by providing a healthy yogurt parfait (4oz) that is popular with students and is made with Yoplait® yogurt, fruit and cereal.  Click here for more information.

Recess Before Lunch

Switching the current schedule of elementary school classes to having lunch first and then recess has proven to be better for children’s health. The program aims to increase students’ nutrition, improve behavior and increase academic achievement.  The change results in increased nutrient intakes and milk and food consumption as opposed to the kids rushing through their meal to maximize playtime. Studies also show that teachers get more time in the classroom because kids are settled down and able to concentrate.  Click here for more information.

Just Say Cheese

Just Say Cheese is a marketing campaign that will help schools increase the awareness of and the importance of cheese in the school meal program. Cheese, one the three main sources of dairy in students’ diets, is a significant contributor of nine essential nutrients including three of the five nutrients of concern identified in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines (calcium, magnesium, potassium). Schools will work with culinary experts and chefs to develop new and different menu items that include cheese and are accepted by students.  Click here for more information.

Reimbursable Vending

Vending machines are most commonly correlated with non-nutritious foods like chips and soda. However, that all changed when The Dairy Council of Florida and Miami-Dade County school nutrition department began working together on their new reimbursable vending machine project. Secondary school students in Miami-Dade can purchase complete, healthy meals made fresh dally from vending machines in their cafeterias.  Click here for more information.
