Switching the current schedule of elementary school classes to having lunch first and then recess has proven to be better for children’s health. The program aims to increase students’ nutrition, improve behavior and increase academic achievement. The change results in increased nutrient intakes and milk and food consumption as opposed to the kids rushing through their meal to maximize playtime. Studies also show that teachers get more time in the classroom because kids are settled down and able to concentrate.
Twenty-two schools in four Florida school districts were provided mini grants to participate in a pilot to evaluate the potential statewide implementation and success of the concept. Florida districts participating in the pilot include:
• Collier
• Duval
• Okaloosa
• Pasco

Testimonials
“I have spent more time in the cafeteria since we implemented ‘Recess Before Lunch’ and our K-4 students seem to be hungrier after recess, therefore eating more of their food during lunchtime. Also, there is a decrease of inappropriate or off-task behavior during lunch. So far, since implementation, I have had no lunch referrals.”
