Flaky Portuguese-inspired pastry bites filled with creamy vanilla custard, fresh lemon, and a touch of cinnamon.

Recipe by @DiahannCooks inspired by traditional Portuguese pastéis de nata.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 
  • 1 cup whole milk 
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream 
  • 1/3 cup sugar 
  • 2 egg yolks 
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch 
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract 
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice 
  • 1 tsp lemon zest 
  • 1 strip lemon peel 
  • Ground cinnamon for garnish 

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and lightly grease a muffin tin.  
  2. Cut puff pastry into circles and press into muffin cups.  
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk milk, heavy cream, sugar, egg yolks, cornstarch, vanilla, lemon zest, lemon juice, and lemon peel until smooth and slightly thickened  
  4. Spoon custard into pastry cups.  
  5. Bake 15–18 minutes or until pastry is golden and custard is set.  
  6. Cool slightly and garnish with cinnamon before serving.
